How to plan a candle collection that feels considered

A collection does not need to be large to feel complete. It needs a clear point of view, enough variety to explore and a reason for each fragrance to belong.

Choose one idea for the collection

Start with a place, a moment or a material that you can describe without a mood board. “Slow mornings,” “a courtyard after rain” or “warm evenings with friends” can each become a useful creative direction. These are examples to explore, not promises about how a candle will affect someone.

Write three words that belong to the idea and three that do not. A bright, airy collection might deliberately avoid a heavy or dessert-like direction. Clear exclusions make sample selection easier.

Then choose a working size for the launch. A small, well-documented range is often easier to explain and organise than many similar options. The right number depends on your testing capacity, budget and order plan.

Give each fragrance a different role

For a three-scent starting range, you might consider a familiar entry point, a more distinctive signature and a contrasting direction. The point is variety within the same story, rather than three versions of nearly the same fragrance.

RoleCreative question
The familiar noteWhat helps someone understand the collection immediately?
The signatureWhich direction best expresses the idea behind the brand?
The contrastWhat adds range while still belonging beside the others?

Use the fragrance catalogue to make a shortlist for each role. Leave the final customer-facing names until you have evaluated the actual oils and prototypes.

A fragrance name and a scent description do different jobs. A name can be imaginative; the description should still help a customer decide. Pair an evocative title with plain scent language rather than relying on a story alone.

Plan the development work before the launch

Create a row for each proposed candle and track its development status: sample selected, prototype planned, evaluation in progress or ready for the next decision. Avoid combining an unfinished experiment with a product that has completed your development process.

Changing fragrance can change a candle’s performance. CandleScience recommends evaluating each complete formula rather than assuming that a successful result transfers to every oil. Read its burn-testing guidance ↗︎

For costing, give wax, fragrance, wick, vessel, label, packaging, wastage and labour separate lines. Add the business costs you actually incur. A fragrance cost calculation can be simple: if the oil costs ₹2,000 per kilogram and a tested recipe uses 12 g, the fragrance component costs ₹24 before any applicable tax or other costs. Those figures are an arithmetic example, not a quotation or formula recommendation.

Keep creative names separate from supplier codes

Your customer might buy “Courtyard Morning,” while your supplier identifies the oil with a product code. Save both. Include the supplier, product code, batch reference where available and the internal formula version in your production record.

When requesting a quote, share the actual quantity unit, expected ordering pattern and required dispatch date. Ask for confirmation of price, taxes and availability in writing. This keeps a beautiful creative project connected to a practical supply plan.

Shiv Prem Agencies began in Old Delhi and supplies fragrance materials to makers and businesses. Use the wholesale enquiry form to explain your collection, application and quantity needs. A clear brief helps the team narrow down a useful starting shortlist.

Tell customers what they need to know

Give each finished candle a clear scent description, the actual net quantity, usage instructions and the details your customer needs to compare it with the rest of the range. Use only claims you can substantiate from your own product and records.

Keep the collection page concise: the idea, the differences between scents and a straightforward path to each product. Your development story can live in a separate journal article for customers who want to read more.

When the range grows, use your original brief as the test for a new addition. It should bring a fresh reason to explore, while still feeling at home beside what you already make.

A note to keep

A strong collection gives every fragrance a clear role and every repeat order a clear record.
